Description

On Friday, August 14, 2009, Nativa Handicrafts Gifts LLC is inviting the community to a unique art exhibit featuring pottery work by Gerald Pinto. The exhibit will present his new “Equinox” line of Navajo-Raku and will take place from 7 pm to 9 pm at Nativa Handicrafts Gifts LLC, a specialty store and gallery owned by cultural anthropologist Garrett Menning and his wife Sophany, who travel throughout the world to hand select special pieces for their shop.
Guests will enjoy an evening of wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres while learning about this unique art style that combines traditional Navajo and Japanese techniques to produce a distinctively beautiful, crackle, antique finish. Mr. Pinto will explain the origin of Navajo-Raku and provide examples of the different stages of his work.
Mr. Pinto is a member of the Navajo-Dine tribe and known throughout New Mexico for his classic-style smoke pots, terra-cotta vessels and black-ware pottery, which all represent different facets of Navajo history and culture. You can also hire Mr. Pinto as a private guide to the Four-Corners region, where he provides insightful commentary of the landscape, history and Native American culture of Northwestern New Mexico.
The art exhibit will take place from 7 pm to 9 pm at Nativa Handicrafts Gifts LLC, located at 2104 Charlevoix Street NW, across from the High Noon Restaurant in Old Town Albuquerque. Nativa is currently the only outlet in the area carrying Mr. Pintos work. This event is open to the community at no charge.
